Sculpture Residences

Sculpture Residence is uniquely situated overlooking an East Austin sculpture park. The design was inspired by Tom Bandages’ sculpture, Functor No. 4, which resides in the adjacent park. A conversation about form, fluidity, and perceived space is explored between the Art and the design of the project.

The Sculpture Residence is a celebration in juxtaposition. The rectilinearity of the form and footprint contrasts the soft carved curves reflected in the exterior and interior spaces. Additionally, the smooth stucco contrasts the textured batten walls, creating a rich language of materiality. Soft neutral colors were chosen on the exterior to allow the play of shadows along the façade. Curved arch windows, which are typically pointed upwards, are turned upside down to create a unique feature in the home.

The textures and form continue the same language in the interior spaces. Natural honed quartzite countertops are used in the kitchen area to create an intimate dining table integrated into the kitchen island. The texture of the exterior battens continues inside the kitchen and bathroom vanity to create a recognizable rhythm throughout the home. Every detail was considered a part of the ongoing conversation between Art and Architecture.
