The Zig Zag Duplex, designed with a mid-century modern aesthetic, is a breath of fresh air in East Austin. This unique architect designed and developed property, sits among a sea of modern farmhouses and traditional homes. Each unit has just over 6,000 square feet of land, providing spacious front and backyards. Units A and B host open floorplans that are around 2,200 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
The Architect / Developer, coXist Studio, coined the project Zig Zag because of its unique undulating second floor that both creates patterned shadows throughout the day to activate the street view but also privatizes views for homeowners. The staggering of the units so that they are only connected at the stairwells provides additional privacy in this carefully considered floor plan layout. Interior light filled spaces are throughout, with large sliding doors opening to the back patio and yard.
Connecting the outside space with the inside is a key element in all of coXist’s designs. Pops of color were used throughout from the Cle cement tile backsplash, to the European tile in the wet room of the master bath. The Zig Zag concept was carried throughout the spaces down to the smallest detail of the cabinet pulls. Custom steel screens were fabricated with this pattern both at the entry and the stair creating a similar rhythm as the building itself. The contractor for Zig Zag, FIA Homes, is known for its high-quality builds in the 04 area code and has brought that same quality to the 02.
As with most of the work designed by coXist, this project has a sensitivity to the community fabric and the future homeowner at its heart. The Zig Zag Duplex is intended to be a lasting part of the vibrant and growing Govalle community for years to come.
